Our Exclusive Il Papavero Wines

Il Papavero Pinot Grigio - 12%
As Richard Baudains of Decanter notes, “Everybody’s talking about how fantastic today’s best Sicilian wines are.” That’s certainly true of this crisp, fruity Pinot Grigio from Scipione Giuliani, the genius behind our bestselling Il Papavero range.
Pinot Grigio in recent years has stormed the charts all over the globe. There’s no shortage of it – but truly outstanding examples are rare. What sets the talented Scipione Giuliani apart from his winemaking peers is his skilful dedication to tracking down the finest parcels of fruit throughout Italy. So when he came across a plot of high grown Sicilian Pinot Grigio, another star was born. It’s mouthwatering stuff – a moreish mix of rich pear and citrus flavours. It has full ripeness paired with bracing freshness thanks to Sicily’s high altitude vineyards and coastal sea breezes. These are the perfect grape growing conditions for which the island is becoming famous. Il Papavero will be delicious served with white meats or seafood risotto.
Fans of our ‘Poppy’ range will definitely love this poll topping Pinot Grigio from Scipione Giuliani

Il Papavero Rosato - 12.5%
Here’s a rosato with sun-blessed Sicilian ripeness and wonderful freshness, too. Mouthfilling, juicy and moreish, it fits in effortlessly – at parties, picnics, barbecues – with food or without. (If any wine can sway a non-rosé fan, it’s this one!)
This has to be one of Italy’s most beguiling neon pink rosatos – great value and consistently delicious each year. How do we do it? It’s all down to Papavero maestro Scipione Giuliani. Most Italian winemakers are fiercely proud of their region, but Scipione is fiercely proud of Italy and hugely passionate about delivering best quality and value. As he can’t choose the weather for each vintage, he chooses instead the ‘luckiest’ regions for the ripest, tastiest grapes – giving Il Papavero wines what we call 'the Poppy factor'. So, here’s Scipi’s 2013 selection from the high, breezy hills above the Sicilian coastline. An irresistible, crisply fruity apéritif that’s great with food, too – from cold salmon to chicken, prawns to pea risotto.
Like a bowl of chilled cherries on a warm summer’s day, this seductive rosato has the ‘Poppy factor’

Il Papavero Primitivo - 14%
Puglian Primitivo is “seriously fruity and bold” (BBC Good Food magazine) and this powerful, rich, special edition, from the maker of your No.1 most reordered red, offers all the spicy fruit packed richness and weight of Italy’s sun-blessed south.
It’s no coincidence the Papavero family of wines is amongst our customers’ favourites – winemaker Scipione Giuliani always manages to capture the very essence of the grape, the spirit of Italy and a delicious drinkability. This is the granddaddy of the group, made purely from Primitivo from a plot of 50 year old vines, resulting in very concentrated flavour. Scipione discovered the vines in Puglia, and insisted that the grapes be bottled solo. To match the richness of the fruit he aged the wine in barrel for a few months, lending it mellow roundness and complexity. ll Papavero Primitivo is a weighty red, best served with similarly hearty food. Enjoy with spaghetti with a tomato, garlic and basil sauce, or with roast meats or pork casserole.
Dramatically rich, pure Primitivo from maestro Scipione Giuliani – the dark side of Il Papavero!
